THE ADVENTURES OF MEGAN MARTIN: THE UNDERWORLD is the second
in the series. Megan and her friend May saved Grandma
Martha's farm in the first episode THE MEDALLION MYSTERY.
They discovered the ancient MEDALLION, CROWN and KEY JEWELS
that make the CROWN DEVICE operational. Now they return home
to the city just before school starts. Even before they
unpack their bags from summer vacation they set out on an
adventure to a VERY HAUNTED MANSION.
EXT. BATES MANSION 1947 - NIGHT
LEGEND GRAPHIC: "Undisclosed Location, 1947, USA."
TREE LEAVES BLOW IN THE AUTUMN BREEZE. LIGHTNING FLASHES,
THUNDER RUMBLES. THREE STORY MANSION LARGE AND OMINOUS in
the night. ANTI-PERSONNEL FENCE surrounds the property.
LARGE IRON GATES CHAINED AND LOCKED FROM THE INSIDE.
INT. BATES MANSION 1947 - BASEMENT - NIGHT
Inside the SECRET LABORATORY of the BATES MANSION a military
guard, MANCHESTER, watches a sphere like METALLIC CONTAINMENT
FACILITY. Inside is an UNEARTHLY BLACK, GREEN, AND YELLOW CAT
LIKE CREATURE WITH LONG FANGS, REPTILIAN SKIN and GLOWING RED
EYES. Folded down on its back are a set of FIN LIKE WINGS
that run from between its shoulders to the end of its short
tail. Manchester looks through a glass portal at the
creature. The creature looks back, its eyes glowing yellow.
The guard backs away from the chamber.
RAISING HEAD, CREATURE'S EYES CHANGE FROM YELLOW TO RED
MANCHESTER
I don't care how valuable the
professor says it is, I don't like
it.
Manchester checks the ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS AND GAUGES ON
THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAGE. A SECOND GUARD, FRANKLIN, joins the
first. He glances at the refrigerator.
FRANKLIN
They say it has quite a taste for
blood.
MANCHESTER
Shut up, Franklin.
FRANKLIN
They say it can see in total
darkness.
Franklin shines his flashlight in the creature's eyes through
a glass portal in the sealed cage. The creature closes its
eyes then turns away from the light.
FRANKLIN
He doesn't seem to like that much.
MANCHESTER
Leave it alone, Franklin. It's got
enough reasons to hate everyone in
this place.
FRANKLIN
That thing gives you the willies,
doesn't it, Manchester?... They say
you saw it outside of its cage
once.
MANCHESTER
They also say they're sending a
truck to come get it and make it
someone else's problem.
Franklin double checks the electrical connections.
FRANKLIN
Looks like it's holding all right.
(looking at Manchester)
You really saw it outside the cage?
MANCHESTER
Yeah, I saw it.
FRANKLIN
You sure you weren't dreaming?
MANCHESTER
I wasn't dreaming. I turned around,
(pointing at location on
floor)
there it was licking its lips and
looking at me. I grabbed for my
gun, blinked and it was back inside
the cage.
FRANKLIN
Then how did it get out?
MANCHESTER
I don't know. That's why they
electrified the outside of the
cage.
LOUD CLAP OF THUNDER OUTSIDE. LIGHT FLICKERS inside the lab.
Both men watch the lights. Finally the lights stop flashing.
Manchester checks the power on the containment facility.
Franklin sits down in nearby chair. He pulls a cigarette from
his shirt pocket.
FRANKLIN
Don't worry. If the power fails the
backup generator will kick on.
Drops of sweat drip from Manchester's face.
MANCHESTER
We aren't suppose to smoke down
here.
(nods toward the cage)
It doesn't like smoke.
FRANKLIN
(grins)
You think it's going to report me
to Colonel Bates?
FLASH OF LIGHTNING, LOUD CLAP OF THUNDER. POWER GOES OFF,
ROOM GOES DARK. Seconds pass. Emergency battery lights on
the wall come on down the hallway. The two guards watch in
anticipation. Manchester checks the gauges on the cage.
MANCHESTER
They're all dead.
Franklin's eyes grow wide watching GLOWING RED EYES in the
shadows. Pulls gun, falls from chair. FIRES SHOT. Scrambles
to get up. Manchester pulls his gun and backs away from the
shadows. GLOWING RED EYES MOVE IN THE SHADOWS. Sharp
CLICKING SOUNDS come from the location of the glowing eyes.
Franklin FIRES AGAIN AND AGAIN toward the glowing eyes. The
GLOWING EYES LEAP FORWARD FROM THE SHADOWS. MANCHESTER FIRES
HIS GUN at the swiftly moving image. SCREAMS FILL THE ROOM.
FADE OUT.
FADE IN:
EXT. BATES MANSION - NIGHT
OLDER MANSION LOOMS IN THE DARKNESS - LATE SUMMER
GRAPHIC: "Present Day"
INT. MANSION LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
LARGE OLD ROOM. BLUE LIGHT APPEARS, MEGAN AND MAY APPEAR IN
THE LIGHT. Megan removes her crown device, BLUE GLOW AROUND
THEM SUBSIDES. She hooks crown onto her belt and turns on
flashlight. May has her eyes closed afraid to look.
MAY
Are we there yet?
May opens one eye then the other
MAY
Why do I let you talk me into these
things?
MEGAN
Wow! Just look at this place!
An old black and white TV is in one corner of the room.
There's a recliner and old sofa. Central area of the hardwood
floor is covered with a large throw rug. A curio cabinet is
against one wall, beside it is a bookcase with several books.
MEGAN
See, May, there's nothing to worry
about. It's just an old house.
MAY
(serious)
You're not kidding me, Megan.
There's something here. Something
terrible. Something that killed
five people in this very house!
(excited)
Oh look, a sofa!
May begins lifting cushions and looking under them.
MEGAN
What are you doing, May?
MAY
Looking for lost coins.
Megan shakes her head, removes the crown from her belt,
exchanges the blue transport jewel for the white one. Puts
the crown on her head. GHOSTLY WHITE GLOW MOVES OVER HER.
MAY
What are you doing?
MEGAN
I'm looking for ghosts.
May removes a SILVER DOLLAR, HALF DOLLAR, and 1947 GOLD CLASS
RING one after the other from the sofa.
MAY
Oh look! I found a silver
dollar!...I found a half dollar,
and...A man's ring.
Megan joins May shining her light on the ring.
MAY
It's a class ring. Year of 1947.
Megan begins looking around the room again. She moves to the
front windows. She looks out, sees A CAR PASSING BY.
INT. CAR - NIGHT
BILLY BOB and LULU MAY inside the car see MEGAN'S GHOSTLY
FORM IN THE WINDOW of the Bates mansion.
BILLY BOB
Oh, Jesus!
Billy Bob slams on his brakes. His CAR SLIDES INTO DITCH.
INT. MANSION LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
Megan watches the car slide into the ditch.
MEGAN
Stupid people shouldn't have a
driver's license.
May joins Megan to see what the noise is outside.
EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
Billy Bob and Lulu May stand in the road looking toward
MEGAN'S WHITE GLOWING IMAGE IN THE WINDOW. Billy Bob points.
BILLY BOB
See, Lulu May, I told you that
house was haunted!
LULU MAY
My word! I wouldn't have believed
it if I hadn't seen it with my own
eyes, Billy Bob.
INT. MANSION LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
SOFT WHITE GLOW AROUND MEGAN WITH CROWN
Megan walks toward a large open doorway in the back of the
room. May notices an OLD CRANK STYLE WALL PHONE.
MEGAN
Come on, May. Let's have a look
around.
May points at the old phone.
MAY
Look, Megan. There's one of those
old phones you said your grandma
used to have.
Megan walks to the phone. She picks up receiver, puts it
against her ear then cranks the phone and listens. A DEEP
GROWLING VOICE SPEAKS TO HER, but May does not hear.
MEGAN
Oh, my!
(jerks receiver from ear)
MAY
What is it?
MEGAN
I heard a voice in that phone!
MAY
What did the voice say?
MEGAN
It said, "Get out of my house!"
MAY
(laughing)
Good joke, Megan. You had me going
there.
MEGAN
(serious)
I am not joking!
Megan looks at phone, listens for a moment, hangs it up. May
looks at the phone. Megan notices NAMES WRITTEN ON THE WALL
BESIDE THE PHONE. She points at one of the names.
MEGAN
It's my brother's name.
May nods. Megan walks to the doorway to the dining room.
INT. MANSION DINING ROOM - NIGHT
SOFT WHITE GLOW AROUND MEGAN WITH CROWN
A LARGE WOODEN TABLE in the center of the room with a
CANDELABRA. Four candles in it are burned down within three
or four inches of their base. Under the candelabra on the
table is A DRAWING OF PENTAGRAM. Megan looks at table. May
tries the light switch by the door, but it doesn't work.
MEGAN
It's a star inside a circle.
MAY
It's a pentagram.
Megan runs a finger through the dust across the drawing on
the table. Megan notices a WHITE CIRCLE AROUND TABLE on the
floor. She bends down. She sees a CANISTER OF SALT laying
on its side on the floor. Several OVERTURNED CHAIRS lay on
the floor around the table.
MAY
Looks like something bad happened
here.
Megan walks around the table then looks up. An OLD
CHANDELIER hangs above the table. ROLLED UP SAGE IS on the
table bound with string and burnt on one end. Beside it is a
NOTE PAD. She picks up the sage and sniffs it.
May walks around the table from the other direction. She
notices several PENCILS on the floor. She picks one up, puts
it on table.
MAY
It looks to me like someone was
having a seance here.
May begins to look at the loose papers on the table. Megan
picks up some loose papers on the floor and puts them on the
table where May is. May looks at the scribbled marks.
MEGAN
What is it?
MAY
It's automatic writing. Someone was
trying to communicate with the
spirits.
Megan begins to set all the chairs up around the table. She
finds an old BOX OF KITCHEN MATCHES and puts them on the
table beside May. May takes a match and lights the candles in
the candelabra. May takes a seat in front of the papers. She
begins looking through them. Megan takes a seat at the end of
the table. The CHANDELIER BEGINS TO MOVE.
MEGAN
No ghosts yet.
May looks up from the papers.
MAY
They were trying to do an exorcism.
Evidently something went wrong.
May slides a paper across the table to Megan.
INSERT
Page with AUTOMATIC WRITING, words on paper read "HELP US."
MEGAN
'Help us.'
MAY
What do you think those dark red
spots are on the paper?
MEGAN'S POV
BLOOD SPOTS ON THE PAPER GLOW RED.
RETURN TO SCENE.
MEGAN
My first guess would be blood.
The two girls look at each other. Megan looks closely at the
table. She runs her hand over the table clearing some dust.
MEGAN'S POV
BLOOD SPOTS ON THE TABLE GLOW RED.
RETURN TO SCENE.
MAY
What is it?
MEGAN
Those little dark red spots are all
over the table too...
Megan looks up across the table. Her eyes widen. She gets up
from her chair and begins to back toward the wall.
MAY
What's wrong, Megan?
MEGAN
You might want to see this.
May walks around the table and joins Megan. She takes Megan's
hand. The WHITE GLOW MOVES OVER HER.
MAY
(gasps)
Oh, my!
MEGAN'S POV
Seated around the table are FOUR GHOSTLY FIGURES. A MAN sits
at one end of the table reading from papers. A WOMAN GOES
AROUND THE TABLE POURING A CIRCLE OF SALT ON THE FLOOR. She
then takes her seat and another WOMAN gets up, LIGHTS THE
SAGE AND GOES AROUND INSIDE THE CIRCLE MOVING THE SMOKE ABOUT
WITH HER HAND. One of the WOMEN LIGHTS THE CANDLES ON THE
CANDELABRA AND PLACES IT IN THE CENTER OF THE PENTAGRAM on
the table. The group clasps hands and begin speaking in
unison. LIPS MOVE BUT NO SOUND.
FORMER SHOT WITH GHOSTS AND GLOWING GIRLS WATCHING
Megan and May watch the ghostly show.
MAY
What are they doing?
MEGAN
Praying or chanting I think.
The girls hear a SCRATCHING SOUND in the room behind them.
MEGAN
Go see what that is.
MAY
I don't think so!
One of the women at the table LIGHTS FIVE MORE CANDLES AND
POSITIONS THEM ON THE POINTS OF THE STAR they had drawn upon
the table. Another closes her eyes, goes into a trance and
BEGINS AUTOMATIC WRITING while another woman changes the
pages for her.
The GLOWING GIRLS hear more SCRATCHING coming from the half
open door behind them. May shines her flashlight into the
room. She looks back at the ghostly show. Suddenly a GUST OF
STRONG WIND BLOWS through the room BLOWING THE CANDLES OUT.
The FIVE CANDLES AT THE POINTS OF THE STAR RISE UP FROM THE
TABLE IN A CIRCULAR MOTION TOWARD THE CHANDELIER. Suddenly
THEY FLY OUT HITTING THE WALLS IN ALL DIRECTIONS THEN FALL TO
THE FLOOR. The GHOSTLY PEOPLE VANISH from the table. Megan
and May look at one of the candles on the dusty floor. May
trembles. Megan is stunned. Again comes the SOFT SCRATCHING
SOUND from the room behind them. The girls look toward the
door.
MEGAN
What do you think?
MAY
I think there's something in that
room.
MEGAN
Let's see what it is.
May releases Megan's arm. GLOW SUBSIDES FROM MAY. She pushes
the door open. The HINGES SQUEAK. She shines her light into
the room.
MAY
It's a bedroom.
INT. MANSION DOWNSTAIRS BEDROOM - NIGHT
SOFT WHITE GLOW AROUND MEGAN WITH CROWN
May and Megan look through the open door. They see an old bed
and bedside table with old electric lamp on it. There's A
BROKEN WINDOW WITH A HOLE WHERE THE GLASS IS MISSING, a
dresser with cracked mirror on top and a closet door in one
wall. Carefully they make their way into the bedroom.
MAY
I...I...I don't see anything.
MEGAN
Something made that scratching
sound.
MAY
(regaining her courage)
Probably a mouse or rat.
May makes her way to the bed. Megan inspects the old dresser
drawers. Pulling out a drawer she finds some clothing
inside. She removes a shirt from the drawer.
MEGAN
It's military.
May glances at the shirt.
MAY
So maybe they were in the military.
Megan throws the shirt back into the drawer. Continues to dig
around in the drawer while May moves to the broken window.
She inspects the torn curtain and bent curtain rod. May sees
BRANCHES AND ACORNS ON THE BEDSPREAD.
MAY
Looks like something's been living
in here.
MEGAN
Probably a squirrel or some other
woodland creature.
Megan pulls another drawer out. Makes a sour face.
MEGAN
Looks like something's been living
in here too.
Megan pushes the drawer back in. May looks under the bed,
pulls white porcelain bucket with lid from under bed. A
HISSING NOISE comes from under the bed. May drops the bucket
with a CLANG as it hits the floor. Loud GROWLING HISSING
SOUND comes from under the bed. May stands on the bed.
MAY
(frightened)
What's that?
Megan backs out the door.
MAY
You are not - I repeat - NOT -
leaving me in here alone with that
thing!
Bending down, Megan shines her light under the bed.
MEGAN
May, I think you should come over
here now.
MAY
(frightened)
What do you see?
MEGAN
I see two glowing red eyes under
the bed.
MAY
(petrified)
I'm not putting my foot down there.
That thing might bite my leg off.
GROWLING HISSING SOUND comes from under the bed. May shines
her light around the edges of the bed.
MEGAN
The eyes just vanished.
MAY
I'm just going to die right here!
Megan moves closer to the bed on her hands and knees trying
to see what the creature is. Suddenly she sits up.
MEGAN
I thought I heard something in the
front room.
Megan listens but hears nothing and resumes her quest.
MEGAN
Pull the bedspread up so I can see
under the bed.
May on hands and knees, takes hold of the bedspread and pulls
it up. Megan sees the flash of the RED EYES again as a very
FRIGHTENED RACCOON CHARGES toward her from under the bed.
Both girls SCREAM. Megan falls backward onto the floor. The
raccoon grabs Megan's new Tuffy boot and bites down. Megan
screams and kicks.
MEGAN
It's got me! It's got me!
Suddenly they hear the sound of the FRONT DOOR SLAMMING. The
raccoon turns loose of Megan's boot, runs right across the
bed beside May and out the hole in the window. Megan examines
the TEETH PRINTS IN HER BOOT.
MEGAN
He bit my new Tuffy!
CLUMPING SOUNDS of someone running out the door come from the
front room. The FRONT DOOR SLAMS AGAIN.
MAY
(whispering)
Megan? I think someone else is in
the house.
MEGAN
(whispering)
We can't get caught in here.
Megan removes her crown. The WHITE GLOW SUBSIDES. Frantically
Megan fumbles for the blue jewel dropping it on the floor.
May joins Megan on the floor. Megan finds the blue jewel and
puts it into the crown device. Through the open bedroom door
the girls see LIGHTS FLASH THROUGH THE LIVING ROOM WINDOWS.
May cautiously moves into the dining room looking into the
living room through the door.
MEGAN
I think they ran out when they
heard us screaming.
The girls move into the dining room.
INT. MANSION LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
The girls peek into the living room. Carefully they move to
the front windows and look outside. A LIGHT FLASHES THROUGH
THE WINDOW. The girls duck back away from the light. As it
passes they look back out again.
MEGAN
What is this? A convention in the
road?
MAY
I see a car in the ditch, a wrecker
and three other cars parked in the
road...
Looks like five or six people
standing in the road looking toward
the house.
MEGAN
Does it take that many people to
pull a car out of the ditch?
MAY
Uh, oh, there's a police car.
Megan standing in front of the window not thinking puts the
crown on her head. LIGHT BLUE GLOW MOVES OVER MEGAN.
EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
BILLY BOB
(pointing at house)
Look! There it is again, a blue one
this time!
People standing in the road in front of the house observe the
BLUE GHOSTLY IMAGE IN THE WINDOW.
INT. MANSION LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
SOFT BLUE GLOW AROUND MEGAN WITH CROWN
MAY
You said you saw the car go into
the ditch.
MEGAN
Yeah, so?
MAY
And you were standing in front of
the window glowing like that?
MEGAN
Yeah, so?...
Suddenly Megan realizes what happened. She moves away from
the window.
MEGAN
Oh, boy! I caused that accident,
didn't I?
May crosses her arms, looks at Megan, shakes her head.
MEGAN
Invisible mode on.
MEGAN AND THE BLUE GLOW VANISH from the room.
MAY
Where'd you go?
MEGAN (V.O.)
I'm right here. I didn't want them
to see me.
May feels her way in the dark toward Megan.
MAY
Give me a hand.
Megan takes May's hand. MAY ALSO BECOMES INVISIBLE.
MEGAN AND MAY TRANSLUCENT OR SOFT BLUE FOR INVISIBLE EFFECT
MEGAN
If they come inside they can't see
us. And if we need to we can zap
back home in a blink.
EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
Group gathered at the fence by the road watching the house.
A man points toward a GLOWING ORB IN AN UPSTAIRS WINDOW.
JOHNNY RAY
Look! There's another one upstairs!
INT. MANSION LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
MEGAN AND MAY TRANSLUCENT OR SOFT BLUE FOR INVISIBLE EFFECT
MEGAN
What did he say?
MAY
He said there was another one
upstairs.
Both girls look at the ceiling. Megan pulls May toward the
staircase.
MEGAN
We have to go check this out.
MAY
(reluctant)
You think that's a good idea? There
might be a real ghost up there.
INT. MANSION DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT
MEGAN AND MAY TRANSLUCENT SOFT BLUE FOR INVISIBLE EFFECT
Megan leads May down the hallway to the foot of a long flight
of stairs. Both girls look up the staircase. As they do a
BRILLIANT SOFTBALL SIZE ORB FLIES ACROSS the landing.
MEGAN
(excited, pointing)
Did you see that?
MAY
I saw it. Was that a big one or
little one?
INT. MANSION STAIRCASE - NIGHT
MEGAN AND MAY TRANSLUCENT SOFT BLUE FOR INVISIBLE EFFECT
Megan leads the way up the SQUEAKY STAIRS while holding May's
hand.
MEGAN
I'd call that a big one.
The girls hear HINGES SQUEAK. They look over the handrail to
the hallway below.
MAY
We have company.
MEGAN
Don't worry they can't see us.
Megan continues leading May to the first landing.
OFFICER RAGSDALE (O.S.)
(calling)
Is anyone in here?
INT. MANSION SECOND FLOOR LANDING - NIGHT
MEGAN AND MAY TRANSLUCENT SOFT BLUE FOR INVISIBLE EFFECT
Girls peek over the hand rail looking down. They see
Officer's FLASHLIGHT BEAMING down hallway.
MEGAN
(whispering)
That's not Officer Smith.
MAY
(whispering)
Something terrible happened to
Officer Smith in this house once. I
doubt you could drag him back in
here.
OFFICER RAGSDALE (O.S.)
Hello... Is anyone in here? This
is the police.
Looking down over the banister Megan and May watch OFFICER
RAGSDALE walk slowly down the hallway. The HOUSE GROANS AND
SHAKES just enough for the girls to notice. A LOW PITCHED
MOANING SOUND passes through the house. The officer freezes
in his tracks, drawing his gun. Surprised, Megan and May look
at each other. May's eyes widen. Soft deep BREATHING SOUND
comes from the walls.
MEGAN
(whispering)
Listen? It sounds like the house is
alive.
MAY
(whispering, frightened)
I think we should go home now?
The girls watch as Officer Ragsdale makes his way to the foot
of the stairs and looks down both hallways.
OFFICER RAGSDALE
Is someone in here? This is the
police. I am armed.
More FOOTSTEPS are heard. The girls watch as OFFICER SMITH
joins Ragsdale. The officers search the darkness with their
flashlights. Ragsdale moves into a dark hallway while Smith
positions himself near the back door, facing another door at
the side of the hallway.
MAY
(whispering)
Something about that door bothers
him.
Officer Smith slowly opens the door and shines his light down
a very dark flight of stairs.
MEGAN
(whispering)
It's the basement.
Another low pitched MOANING SOUND moves through the building
from the basement upward. SMITH SLAMS THE BASEMENT DOOR SHUT.
Ragsdale returns.
OFFICER RAGSDALE
Anything down there?
Smith staring toward the door, hesitates to answer.
OFFICER SMITH
No, nothing.
OFFICER RAGSDALE
Let's go check upstairs.
Ragsdale moves up the stairs towards Megan and May.
MAY
(whispering)
Any time now.
MEGAN
(whispering)
He can't see us.
Ragsdale turns his flashlight and shines it across the girls'
faces. The LIGHT DISTORTS OVER THEM AND CASTS A RIPPLE LIKE
LIGHT THROUGH WAVES OF WATER ON THE WALL BEHIND THEM but
Ragsdale doesn't notice.
OFFICER RAGSDALE
I thought I heard something up
here. Sounded like a girl or
woman's voice.
The girls hold their breath as Ragsdale walks within inches
of them. Not seeing them, he starts off down the walkway that
leads to the second story hallway.
MAY
(whispering, uneasy)
He can hear us. Can we go now?
MEGAN
(whispering)
Follow me.
