It all begins in The Medallion Mystery.

Megan Martin was just an average 15 year old girl.  She lives in middle class suburbia USA as do most of her friends and enemies.  She has a mom, dad, and older brother.  She and her friends go to public school.  Megan is very attractive with blond hair and blue eyes.  As with all teenagers she has hopes and dreams of a happy life.  Megan understands very well how things can sometimes happen that steal people's dreams.

Megan has a history of allergies and in the past had accidents and allergic reactions that frightened her mother nearly to death.  On one occasion Megan stopped breathing and only a quick dash to the nearest doctor's house down the gravel road from the farm saved Megan's life.  Since then Megan's mom makes Megan take an emergency medical kit with her when she goes anywhere, especially to the farm.  As a teenager Megan hates the way her mother is "over protective of her" now.  Needless to say Megan and mom don't always agree on what's best for Megan.

Megan's mom Donna and dad Roy both work to pay the bills. They are both HAM radio operators.  Megan's dad Roy is an electrical engineer.  He works for a company designing new electronic gadgets.

Her brother Gary and that neighbor girl Brianna drive Megan crazy.

Gary is 17 years old and a senior in high school.  He's a typical jock, big on muscle and somewhat lacking in brains and manners.  He works at one of the local Lion Mart stores that's owned by multi-millionaire Simon Banister.  He loves to get up early in the morning and beat on Megan's door to wake her just for the fun of it.  He also likes to muss her hair up and say, "It's all because I love ya, sis."

Brianna the "nosey neighbor girl" is two years younger than Megan.  She comes into the series in the second novel, The Underworld.  She's spoiled rotten by her parents who take her on expensive vacations and buy her just about anything she wants.  Brianna believes the largest shelf in her room is her floor.  She wants to be Megan's friend more than anything, but she doesn't know how to make friends.  She tries to prove she is better than Megan and May, which usually causes Megan and May to respond with a spiteful prank.  Brianna is also notorious for spying on Megan and May and letting herself into Megan's house and room unannounced.  Brianna is a certified SCUBA diver as are her parents.  You can bet if she doesn't know something that she knows a "fireman" who does.  Brianna was created by Kristy for her character in the series.

May is Megan's best friend.  She lives about a block down the street.  She's the same age as Megan and has most of the same classes as Megan.  May's personality is quite a bit different though and she has a real bad habit of saying what ever she's thinking.  It is very difficult to keep a secret when May knows what the secret is.  Megan and May are both highly interested in the paranormal and UFO's.  Laura created this character with her best friend at that time Amber Harrold in mind.  Amber moved away but still comes to the Megan Martin events when she can and remains friends with both Kristy and Laura.

Megan's grandma Martha Martin is in her 60's and lives alone on a fairly large farm in a place called Peaceful Pond about an hour's drive from the city.  There's a north 40, a south 40, and several other plots of land south of the south 40.  There are some fields but most of the land beyond the south 40 consists of forest.  On the southern-most plot of land there is a quaint little stream, a very old wood-frame house and two small fields.  The farm house is a large two story house with quite a few rooms, with several bedrooms upstairs along with her late husband's study.  Grandpa Fred's study is filled with books and archeological finds from various places around the world.  There's a big old barn on the farm with a hay loft.  South of the house is the chicken yard and the chicken pen.  East of the chicken yard is the pig lot where grandma Martha keeps a big old sow named Calico.  She raises piglets in the pig pen.  Since Fred's death, Martha has been living on borrowed money.  She borrowed money against the farm and one day soon she will be required to pay that money back or lose the farm.  (Calico is the name of the runt piglet that author Bryon and sister Gina raised for their grandpa John Smith.  Martha's farm in this series is based upon the farm where Bryon spent a great deal of time as a lad.  Grandpa John Smith was a farm veterinarian.  Bryon frequently helped his grandpa with sick and injured animals.)

Megan's late grandpa Fred was a farmer and part time archeologist like his father Henry Arthur Martin before him.  They both died years apart of the same mysterious illness and are buried in the family cemetery at the south edge of the south 40.  If you look straight south from the cemetery you can see Henry's old log house among the shrubs and trees.  Henry found the mysterious medallion and five of the jewels that fit into the crown.  He knew what the crown looked like but did not know where to locate it.  Fred, reading his father's journals, knew what the crown looked like and finally located it in an unlikely place. However, Fred did not know where his father had hidden the control jewels for the crown device.  At least he didn't know until after he died.  You see grandpa Fred has unfinished business and Megan is very much a part of that.  Megan however can't see ghosts, but she has a friend who can.

Megan dearly loved her grandpa Fred.  Fred bought her a cute little pony she named
Sparky.  Megan loved that pony and couldn't wait to ride him anytime she came to the farm.  Then one day grandpa Fred came into the farmhouse and in his arms he had something wrapped up in a towel.  He held it out and Megan peeked inside.  There curled up in the towel was a little black and tan furball she named Scratches.

Like Sparky,
Scratches was also a gift from her grandpa Fred.  Scratches, as cats go, is very independent.  She comes when she feels like it, not when she's called.  Scratches is unusually smart for a cat as well as gifted.  You see Scratches can see and hear things that normal humans can't.

Megan was distraught and bitter about the death of her grandpa Fred.  After her grandma Martha sold Megan's pony Sparky back to the neighbor, John Butler, Megan decided that was the final straw.  For five years Megan refused to go visit her grandma at the farm.  After all, that pony belonged to Megan and it was not her grandma's to sell.

John and Alma Butler are horse ranchers who live the next farm down the road from Martha.  They have a small farm with more trees than pasture.  They train, breed, and board horses for customers.  They desperately need more land for their business.  John farms Martha's fields for hay but some of his horses have become ill and he's had to borrow money from the bank just like Martha has.  It seems quite a few of the farmers in this area have problems that seem more deliberate than coincidental.

Payah is actually an angel who had been sent to earth 1000's of years ago to help a king. The king had been given the Crown device by the ancient ascended beings.  When the crown was lost and the king was murdered Payah went into hiding in the underworld to conceal his shame.  When Megan comes into possession of the crown device the ascended beings send another angel to fetch him.  When he returns to earth in present day, he's overwhelmed at the strange sights, sounds, and in some places the smog.  He's not certain how to dress in order to blend in either but then again only Megan and May (those who have used the crown device) can see him.  May says he's an angel but Megan isn't quite sure at first.  Payah is there to help protect the crown as well as to teach Megan certain lessons about how to use the crown device and help her to better understand the world around her.  He has a bad habit of showing up when he's not wanted and not being around when he is wanted.  He also sometimes shows up dressed according to the situation Megan and her friends find themselves in.  If Megan changes into a dog, for example, Payah may change into a dog catcher.  He loves popcorn, soda, junk food, and watching TV and movies.  He's also got a secret that Megan is figuring out as the series progresses.

MiKayla appears in the series as Brianna's friend in novel 3, A Christmas Story.  MiKayla's parents are separated and sometimes she lives with mom and sometimes she lives with dad.  Sometimes her and her mother donate time at the homeless shelter.  She does not discover the secret of the Crown device and Megan's secret identity until novel 6.  This character was created for a very special friend of ours, Morgan Bledsoe.  Morgan has been there for us every single time we have asked.  She goes with us to schools and book signings.  She reads the novels and helps us with PR.

Xeba enters the series in novel 4, A Space In Time.  She is a native of planet Phargus, a world inhabited by dinosaurs.  Her people are not from Phargus.  They are war refugees from Tarah, a planet that is more technologically advanced than Earth.  She and her people have lived as refugees on the planet Phargus for about 1000 years.  Xeba is 4 1/2 feet tall with very light blond hair and ice blue eyes.  Since Phargus has greater gravity than Earth her bones and muscles are very dense making her much stronger and faster for her size than an Earth human.  The saying 'dynamite comes in small packages' must apply to Xeba.  Xeba learns very quickly.  She lives on earth about half the time and on Orion the rest of the time.  She is able to set the atmosphere and gravity to her liking in her room and her laboratory on Orion.  With her greater mental facilities and using Orion's powerful abilities to replicate anything she can design, she becomes the scientist for the group.  Of course, not everything she designs works right the first time and sometimes Brianna, May, and Kat tease her about it.  When they want something special though Xeba is the one they come to.  Megan thought her and May were good at pulling pranks. Well they've met their match in Xeba.  Xeba doesn't like being referred to as "little" and now and then she reminds people that where she comes from she was not little.  In novel 6, Dark Matter, Xeba gives birth to her first child.  Two different women have appeared on the novel covers as Xeba.  Xeba is a creation of the author for the purpose of the series.  The women who appear as Xeba on the covers of two of the novels had nothing to do with the creation of the character.

Katharina, or Kat, first appears in the series in novel 3, A Christmas Story, but reappears in novel 5, Night Visions.  In that novel, Kat rescues Megan from a mugger but Megan had hit her head and has amnesia.  She doesn't remember who she is or where she lives.  Kat is on the run from the police since she is a runway and she's afraid to report Megan to the authorities so she takes her to the homeless shelter.  As Megan and Kat try to figure out who Megan really is little by little Kat realizes that Megan isn't just a regular person.  She's wearing a necklace that must be worth at least $10,000.  By the end of novel 5 Megan gets her memory back and tells Kat who she is.  Kat then becomes a part of Megan's inner circle and moves to Orion.  This character was created for a former friend of Kristy's who was technically never a part of the cast and finally moved away.  Other than asking for a character in the series and giving that character a name, she had nothing to do with the development of the character.

Julianna Skii is our movie star that comes to Martha and John's dude ranch in novel 6, Dark Matter.  She flies in on a week's vacation from her latest movie looking for an escape from the movie business for a few days.  She has no idea that she's going from make believe aliens in the movies to the real thing.  She's the queen of the alien monster movies and Brianna's favorite movie star.  You might imagine that Brianna goes crazy when she discovers that her favorite movie star is right there on the farm with them!  This character was created for Rickie Cousino, long time friend of Laura's.  Rickie is an angel but generally works so much she is not able to join us for our special events.

Agent Roger first appears in novel 3, A Christmas Story.  He really doesn't have many other parts outside of novel 3.  However, some people who read novel 3 tend to love the character so we thought we will tell a little bit more about him here.  He's a rooky F.B.I. agent that sometimes appears to be jinxed with bad luck, especially since May transported in and made his acquaintance at a most inopportune moment.  She thought he was one of the hit men, but later the girls found out he worked undercover for the F.B.I.  Feeling bad about it and realizing they had to get the ledger back to the F.B.I., Megan decided to try to make friends with Roger.  As they did the girls began calling him Agent Roger.  It's always nice to have a friend who works with the F.B.I.

The City: There's no mention of the name of the city where Megan lives. In fact, she could be the next door neighbor girl.  There are a few directional clues mentioned in one of the novels. These clues give some idea where the city might be as well as Peaceful Pond, where her grandmother lives.

Simon Banister is a multi-millionaire who took over his father's empire.  He decided to carry on in his father's tradition by crushing anyone who gets in his way.  He owns "Banister's tower" in the heart of the city.  It's a big office complex where he runs his businesses from.  Banister is buying up farm land. In some cases, he is literally running people off their land using underhanded means and a henchman named Jordan Gilmore.  He also owns several businesses that are not on US soil in order to avoid entanglements with the US government.  It's also one of his ways of keeping some of his money from being tracked by the government.  This guy is Megan's main enemy through the first four novels.

Don Lowery is Banister's chauffeur.  When Banister wants someone dealt with he gives the money to Lowery who hires the thugs to do his dirty work.  Lowery is a man who's indebted to Banister, as many are.  He doesn't always like the things Banister sends him to do, but he thinks he has very little choice.

Jordan Gilmore is a 3 time loser who's never killed anyone yet and isn't sure if his commitment to the money is worth that much.  He gets into trouble, the police lock him up, and Lowery always gets him out again.  Lowery knows Gilmore is an expendable asset and when they are through with him the less people who know the truth the better.

Abdul is a cold blooded killer.  In novel 2, The Underworld, he teams up with Jordan Gilmore in order to encourage or remove certain people from their land so that Banister can buy it cheap.  When he's finished with Gilmore he has every intention of retiring him.

Megan is 18 years old now.  She still has blond hair, blue eyes, and the boys tend to turn their heads as she passes by.
Laura as Megan Martin at 15-16 years old.
Kristy "Brianna" is Laura's sister. You will see her standing to Laura's left (your right) on some of the novel covers.
When Laura was 10 years old she asked her dad if they could write a book.  They collaborated, came up with the plot and the characters, and began writing.  This was the beginning of the entire Megan Martin series.

Since then Laura and some of her friends have inspired other characters within the novel series.  You will see some of these girls on the front and back covers of the novels.

The first novel took a year to write.  It took three years to find a publisher.  In the following five years Bryon wrote five more novels in the series.

The novels are written by Bryon, who collaborates with his daughters.  The novels are edited by his wife Dawn, Laura and Kristy's mother.

The creation of this novel series is a work of love between father, mother, daughters, and some of their friends.

The bad news is the publisher who made these dreams come true for this family and some of their friends is going out of business.  On Sept. 1st 2005 this wonderful novel series will go out of print.
